Is The Upcoming Google's Privacy Policy Driving You Nuts?

Posted by Noah Mark Rodolfo on February 15, 2012 at 8:25 PM

First off, I am not really keen on writing a topic about Google's new privacy policy not after I stumbled into many articles regarding this online. I didn't even bother to read the policy since I got the notification message from Google. If you have a Google account, you probably received one last month.

The new policy will take effect on March 01, 2012. So what does this mean for you as a regular Google user? Does it really concerns you? If you read the updated policy through the email Google sent you, you probably got bored by the technicality of its statements. So what is the bottom line of this mess?

There are more reports across the Internet about the good and bad effects of this new policies. So I'll make it simple and try to explain to you the basic points with regards to this issue which is based entirely on my perspectives.

google's new privacy policy

So let's start with Google's new Terms of Service (www.google.com/policies/terms/). Based on my understanding, there was really no big changes to TOS, it only got simpler, precised and universal to make it more understandable for regular Google users. If you created your own Google account such as Calendar, Gmail, search, Groups, etc, they will collect and store that information to enable Google to serve you better. This includes search results, better ads and many others.

Any types of Internet service (like for example Google or Facebook) is that it highly requires your consent for modifying, distributing, copying, sharing or publishing that content. If you are not giving Google this consent, you won't be able to post any images, article, videos or any content on any of Google's services like Youtube, Gmail, Blogger, etc. But the problem is that, we are free to upload, share and post things with our own sole discretion on these Internet services. So Google is reaching out to you saying that your "content" can be used on any of Google services without any legal obligations.

Google also clarifies that even if you deleted your content, you will still giving consent to those people or Google users who might stumble into your content accidentally. This means, your content can still be used by people who uses Google. Let me cite an example. Let's say that you posted an image of a dog on your Blogger blog and posted it on your Google+ account or sent it to your friends via email. Once the time that you deleted that image from your Blogger account, your image can still be acquired through your Google+ network or from your friend's email accounts. Those people will keep your consent as their rights to use your dog's image.

The TOS also explains that you can't alter, modify or interfere with any of Google's services other than the program's provided interface or instructions. This includes notices, policies, codes, policies, contents, etc. unless permitted by law or its sole owner. So what does this means to us? This part of the TOS is relatively old statement which indicates that we can't misuse any of Google's services in any form possible. For example, in an open source software, we can alter, modify and distribute the codes or the software itself because it's "open source". In Google's services, we can't do this tricks as we please.

So what about the new Privacy Policy (www.google.com/policies/privacy/preview/)? Based on my point of views, the new policy aims to consolidate all information gathered throughout Google services. So for example you are using Gmail, your ads on your email account will be influenced by outside factors within other Google services like your searches and other services you use.

So how this can affect your Internet experience? Here's the big picture, every content or move you make on any Google platform services are being congregated into one simpler result. For example you are a blogger of a health niche and you are doing a research about depression, of course you would use search services to gather some information or you may even use YouTube for video resources. Once your done researching, you post it on your Blogger blog, post on your Google+ wall and send it to your friends.

Through Google's Privacy Policy, your searches, posts, the videos you watched and your email trail with regards to your depression research are all being collected by Google to better serve you in the future. Looks like Google is making the Internet a safer place right? Well, not really. These information can be used against you if it goes into the wrong hands. Just think about it, there are many possible scenarios why this new policy can affect a regular to expert Internet users.

Since Google anounced its policy updates, it gained various reactions from different Internet advocates and businessmen. Why not? Google knows that privacy is a serious issue where they already made some mistakes before - Google Buzz. But take note, other services like Google Wallet, Chrome and Google Book all have their own sets of privacy policies which is a good thing. You don't want others to get your credit cards information do you?

In summary, this March 01, 2012, Google services will work hand in hand to give us better Google experience. If you want your privacy, Google also allows you to do so to prevent any inconvenience on your part. But if you are a Google afficionado, you voluntarily hand your valuable content to them.

I really think that this move has got to do with the recent SOPA/PIPA debate. As you may notice, this policies are all related to content copyrights and infringement. Maybe Google is placing themselves into neutral corner when the day these SOPA/PIPA thing is passed. I am sure that soon, many big time companies such as Facebook, Wikipedia and many others will follow Google's privacy policy update. So, is the new Google's Privacy Policy still driving you nuts?
